Issue Overview and Spatial Significant (What is there? Why there? In Delhi, the city is blanketed in dust and smog. One of the largest source of this dust particulate is the construction occurring in Delhi, and it accounts of 52% of particulate matter in the air compared to 6.6% from vehicular emissions. India is a growing economy, and the construction is a reflection of the need to develop infrastructure to support economic growth. However the air pollution is causing significant health concerns for workers and citizens in Delhi.
Patterns and Trends (Part of a larger pattern or trend in the region? Or is it isolated?): The problem of air pollution is most serious in developing economies such as China and India, who are willing to sacrifice the environment for the economy. As a result of this sacrifice, pollution related deaths are on the rise. It is also important to note that developed countries were once at this stage of pollution during the Industrial Age.
Geographic Perspectives and interrelationships (SPEEC, connections to studies in class): This issues relates to the idea of economic disparities. Lower income construction workers suffer the brunt of the impact of the air pollution. Their company does not give them any protective clothing, and they cannot afford to purchase some for themselves. In this case, it is a matter of exploitation. These companies have a callous disregard for the wellbeing of their workers and citizens in return for profit.
Key Stakeholders (Who are the key stakeholders?) Construction Companies: Construction of new buildings is the major source of revenue for the business. Safety equipment is expensive and would cut into thin profits.
Construction Workers: With a low income, there are few choices. A livelihood is more important than the health and the environment. Complaining is a surefire way to lose the job.
Citizens of Delhi: The air quality is worsening. It is becoming harder and harder to breathe every day. Within homes, one must purchase air purifiers and plants to clean up the air. No one leaves their house without protective masks if they can afford it.
Issue Implications - Why Care (SPEEC Impacts)? The long lasting impacts of environmental pollution are cause to be concerned. As growing economies develop, they often do so on the back of coal power plants and factories. This increases global warming and magnifies its effects. As there are more droughts and floods, pollution around the world is a cause for global concern. When we examine the potential of climate refugees to disrupt social, economic, and political fabric in otherwise stable countries, pollution and emissions is something that must be controlled.
